Stop Telling AI Your Secrets: What You Need to Know About Privacy Risks

It’s easy to treat a chatbot like a therapist, a voice assistant like a personal secretary, or an AI writing tool like a trusted collaborator. You type a question, get an answer, and the interaction feels private—just you and the machine. But that feeling is misleading. The truth is that many AI services treat your conversations more like data to be collected, stored, reviewed, and sometimes reused than like confidential exchanges.

This isn’t about fearmongering. It’s about understanding how the technology actually works so you can decide what to share and what to keep to yourself.

What actually happens to your data when you use an AI tool

When you use a generative AI chatbot like ChatGPT, Google Bard, or a voice assistant like Alexa, your input doesn’t just disappear after you close the window. Here’s what typically happens, though exact practices vary by company and change over time:

  • Data is used for training. Most AI providers train their models on user interactions to improve responses. Unless you opt out, your chats may become part of the next model version.
  • Human reviewers can see your conversations. OpenAI, Google, and other companies employ human reviewers to rate and improve outputs. These reviewers may see your entire exchange. Company policies usually strip identifying details, but the content itself is visible.
  • Conversations are stored. Providers keep chat logs for varying periods. Even if you delete a chat, copies may persist in backups or for compliance reasons.
  • There’s no confidentiality guarantee. Unlike doctor-patient or attorney-client communications, AI conversations are not legally protected. Companies may share aggregated data with third parties, and law enforcement can request your records.

A well-known incident that brought this into the open was the Samsung employee leak in 2023. Employees accidentally pasted proprietary source code and internal meeting notes into ChatGPT. That data became part of the model’s training set, effectively exposing trade secrets. Samsung subsequently restricted employee use of the tool.

Since then, multiple lawsuits have raised questions about AI training data and user privacy. Ireland’s Data Protection Commission, for instance, has scrutinized OpenAI’s use of personal data. Several AI providers have adjusted their privacy policies—for example, OpenAI introduced the ability to turn off chat history for training, but you must do it manually.

Why this matters for everyday users

You might not be handling corporate secrets, but the risks still apply. People routinely ask AI tools for help writing emails that include their full name, address, or phone number, for summarizing medical records, for generating financial advice with account details, or for troubleshooting work logins.

Once that information enters an AI system:

  • It may be stored and used in future responses for other users. (Large language models do not “remember” chats individually, but training data can influence outputs.)
  • It could become discoverable in a legal dispute or data breach.
  • It might be used for targeted advertising if the provider’s privacy policy allows it.

Privacy policies from the major platforms often contain broad language about data usage. OpenAI’s terms state that they may use content “to develop and improve the Services.” Google’s Bard privacy notice notes that conversations are reviewed by trained reviewers. Amazon’s Alexa records are stored in the cloud and can be accessed by the user, but also by Amazon employees for quality improvement. These policies change frequently—a reason to read them before you assume your data is safe.

What you can do to protect yourself

You don’t have to stop using AI tools altogether. But you should treat each interaction as a potential public record. Here are practical steps:

  1. Never share sensitive personal information. That means passwords, social security numbers, credit card details, medical diagnoses, legal case specifics, or private family information. If you wouldn’t post it on a public forum, don’t type it into a chatbot.
  2. Use incognito mode or a guest session. Temporary chats that don’t link to your account reduce the trail. However, note that even incognito modes may still be used for training unless you turn off that setting.
  3. Turn off chat history and training contribution. In ChatGPT, go to Settings → Data Controls and disable “Chat history & training.” For Google Bard, you can pause Bard Activity in your Google Account. For Alexa, review voice recording settings in the app and delete old recordings regularly.
  4. Delete chat histories periodically. Most platforms let you clear conversations. Make it a habit.
  5. Consider alternative tools for sensitive tasks. If you need to draft something containing confidential information, use a local-only tool or an encrypted service that does not share data with third parties. For medical or legal questions, consult a professional directly.
  6. Read privacy policies—or at least summaries. Look for how data is stored, how long it’s retained, whether human reviewers see it, and whether you can opt out.

A final note

AI tools are powerful and can be genuinely useful. But the convenience should not override your caution. The idea that an AI conversation is private is a myth—one that companies have been slow to correct because it benefits them. Until regulations catch up, the responsibility falls on individual users to know what they’re exposing.

Stay curious, but stay skeptical. And if you catch yourself about to type something you wouldn’t want your boss, your bank, or a stranger to read, hit delete first.
