AI Tools Are Getting Smarter — But Your Privacy Is Falling Behind

The TrustArc 2026 Global Privacy Survey, released this week, polled more than 2,000 privacy professionals worldwide. It found that 82% of organizations have already adopted AI in some form. Yet only 38% say they have adequate privacy capabilities to manage the associated risks.
That’s a serious mismatch. The survey identified several specific gaps: many organizations lack AI-specific privacy policies, have weak consent mechanisms for data used to train models, and don’t properly govern how personal information flows into and out of AI tools.
The results underscore a simple reality: corporate privacy programs are struggling to keep pace with rapid AI deployment. And when companies don’t build in privacy from the start, consumers end up bearing the risk.

Every time you paste a question into a chatbot, upload a photo to an AI editor, or ask a smart speaker to order something, you’re handing over data. Some of that data is obviously personal — your name, your address, your voice recording. Some is less obvious, like the text of a message you wrote or the metadata attached to an image.
Under current practices, your inputs are often used to train and improve the AI models. They may be stored, reviewed by human moderators, or even shared with third parties. Companies don’t always make this clear. And when privacy policies do mention it, they’re often buried in legalese.
The survey’s findings suggest that even organizations trying to do the right thing are falling short. That means the default setting for most AI tools today is more data collection than necessary, and less transparency about what happens to it.

5. Install browser extensions that block tracking.
Extensions like Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin, or Ghostery can reduce the amount of data that AI tools and their advertisers collect about your browsing habits. They’re easy to set up and work quietly in the background.
6. Push for stronger protections.
Individual action helps, but systemic change matters more. Support privacy legislation like state-level data protection laws or the proposed federal privacy bill. Write to your representatives. Companies respond when enough customers ask for better defaults.
